  • Thank you for your interest in the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) at UAlbany’s College of Nanotechnology, Science, and Engineering (CNSE). SURP is a competitive, full-time, 10-week undergraduate research experience.

    Applicants should be available for the duration of the program, including orientation, their faculty-mentored research experience, required seminars and professional development activities, and the final SURP poster session.

      Citizenship status information is required, however, for access to some of the facilities at UAlbany that are part of the SURP program. Please provide SURP with your U.S. citizenship status, below.

    • SURP is a competitive program and we're unable to offer a paid position to every qualified applicant.

      Students who are not selected for a paid SURP position may instead participate by conducting research with a faculty mentor for academic credit indicate an interest in participating as a volunteer researcher.

      For-credit and volunteer participants remain part of the SURP cohort and receive the same programmatic benefits as paid participants, including professional development seminars, industry speaker presentations, networking opportunities and participation in the final research poster showcase.

      The cost of printing a SURP research poster is covered by the program for all participants at no charge to the student

    • Course Enrollment Policy

      If selected to receive a stipend as a paid SURP participant, there is an expectation that SURP will be your primary academic and professional responsibility for the summer.

      All current or anticipated summer course enrollment must be fully disclosed as part of this application.

      Enrollment in a summer course after accepting a paid SURP position must also be disclosed to and approved by SURP leadership. Failure to disclose course enrollment may result in removal from the program.

    • Each student is responsible for expenses related to travel, lodging and meals. On-campus, apartment-style housing may be available at a discounted rate ($250 per week).
